About the role

The success of Shopify’s platform depends on a strong network infrastructure across our workspaces to make sure that everyone is connected to the services they need. 

Our Network Engineers collaborate with various teams to create functional spaces across Canada and around the world. The team ensures we have a reliable internal network infrastructure so that Shopify Teams and critical systems used by Shopify Merchants are connected to the services they need. We’re looking for a Network Engineer to maintain, operate and support the network infrastructure mainly focused in the Shopify Space in Atlanta, though you may be involved in other network projects in other locations in Canada, the USA and/or Europe.

We’re looking for a Network Engineer to deploy and maintain infrastructure to enhance our ability to prevent, detect, and respond to network performance issues onsite.


  • Planning and designing network changes and expansions in the existing environment
  • Monitoring infrastructure using tools like Datadog and similar programs
  • Learning and collaborating on automation projects using tools like Ansible
  • Finding the best ways to improve internal network services
  • Writing Python scripts to improve automation routines and workflows is a plus
  • Providing user support, network troubleshooting, and maintaining our workspace network infrastructure
  • Assisting the team with ticketing systems and project tracking tools
  • Collaborating on projects to improve and enhance our networks
  • Identifying in-depth network infrastructure problems and analyzing information to develop and evaluate possible creative solutions 
  • Identifying the indicators of system performance and the steps required to enhance or correct that performance, while keeping our overall system goals in mind
  • Determining the time frame and type of maintenance needed and scheduling maintenance tasks accordingly
  • Conducting quality control and performance analysis via tests and inspections of products, services, and processes
  • Deploying and testing networking infrastructure both remotely and on site
  • Reporting to stakeholders for a range of projects/activities
  • Analyzing data and defining network capacity models and performance metrics
  • Coordinating with the network team across sites to execute planned activities and projects 
  • Managing activities related to Network projects including evaluating and prioritizing tasks at each phase of the project 


  • Ability to travel to other Shopify spaces in North America and abroad when needed (travel expected to not exceed 10%) 
  • Ability to work in an on-call rotation (every 2 months)
  • Experience working onsite in an operations capacity
  • Solid knowledge of network protocols, services, standards, and their functionality
  • Experience with:
  • Ansible/AWX automation and deployment
  • OSX-based systems in a large scale network
  • Layer 3 Routing such as OSPF, BGP, and VRFs.
  • Stateful firewalls, non-stateful filtering, and packet inspection.
  • VPNs (GRE, IPSec/SSL, OpenVPN)
  • Wireless (802.1a/b/g/n/ac/ax), 802.1x authentication, and Multicast (PIM-SM, MSDP, IGMP)
  • Aruba Solutions (ArubaOS-CX, Mobility Controller, ClearPass) (nice to have)
  • Substantial experience maintaining network infrastructure and services (DNS, DHCP, Syslog, etc), VPN, Network Infrastructure (Aruba, Fortinet), Ansible
  • Significant experience working with protocols such as IPv4, IPv6, TCP, UDP, STP, ECMP, 802.1[d|s|w]
  • Experience interfacing with cross-functional teams to provide networking infrastructure, planning, and support
  • Ability to thrive in a high-stakes environment in a culture of openness and information sharing
  • Comfortable working autonomously to get things done
  • Proactive and passionate about exploring the latest tech
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and communicate clearly 
  • Strong affinity for being hands on with hardware rack and stack, configuration, and testing
  • Eager to contribute to the design, implementation and ongoing management of the corporate network
