Engineer 5 (Staff Software Engineer)
Vancouver, BC, Canada
We’re a committed and talented group of diverse people working hard to solve a real, universal problem for millions of entrepreneurs: businesses need to understand their financial performance, but for many smaller ones, this means a trade-off between doing their books and running their businesses. Bench solves this dilemma by taking bookkeeping off of their hands. We’ve paired smart humans with incredibly powerful software to develop the fastest, most efficient bookkeeping service in history. This lets us provide monthly and yearly financials at an incredibly accessible price, giving business owners the time, confidence, and knowledge they need to be successful.
Bench is growing fast. Recently, we’ve onboarded our 9000th client and our 500th employee. We have a clear, funded path to profitability, and a roadmap that we believe will rapidly accelerate the trajectory of our business. We’re looking for the brightest minds who love solving tough problems to join us on this incredible journey, in pursuit of bringing financial mastery to our clients.
What does the Engineering department look like?
Joining Bench’s Engineering team means joining a diverse group of individuals. Among us are outdoors enthusiasts, tabletop gamers, theatre buffs, metal fans, tennis players and much more. Some of us have degrees in Computer Science, some of us went to bootcamps, and some of us are self-taught. We don’t all look, think, or communicate in the same way—herein lies the strength of our team.

What is a Software Engineer 5?
An Engineer 5 is an expert in their domain, and a technical leader at Bench. They are charged with increasing the quality of Bench Engineering through direct contribution, mentorship, process innovation, defining/implementing conventions, and finding alignment in principles that ensure we consistently make good decisions. They are accountable for the security, reliability, and performance of all our systems.
At Bench, one of our cultural principles is that we're Default Open. Default Open means taking the time to define the things we care about, and sharing them. In this spirit, we've shared our engineering competencies with the world here. This document better outlines what an Engineer 5 looks like and what it takes to be a successful engineer at Bench.
